Pieces for very beginners

These pieces are for those just beginning. They cover  techniques like broken triads, crossover hands and glisses in little studies that sound like music right from the start. Some have a teacher's part included. All of these little pieces are in C major or a minor with no lever changes, and have a limited range so are suitable to be played on very small leverless harps.

 Pieces for very beginners

 "Lazy Breeze"

This little piece uses both hands, but played separately, not together. Has easy to follow patterns. A teacher's harmony part is included, which may also be used for another student. In C with no lever changes (teacher's part has a Bb).

$1.25

 "Spanish Dance"

Repeated patterns with broken and solid triads. Hands alternate.

$1.25

 "Mermaids"

This is a fun, magical little piece using light crossover glisses to create an underwater effect. Broken ascending and descending triads.

$1.25

 Beginners/Early Intermediate

 "El Testament de Amelia"

This is a beautiful, haunting traditional Catalan song.  It is in D minor (one flat), with middle C# and a lever change on the G# below middle C.  As the song is slow, there is plenty of time for the lever changes.  Level of playing is approximately early Intermediate, as the lever change needs to be taken into account.

$1.25

 Vivaldi's "Spring"

This is from my "Seasons" book for adult beginners.  You will receive both Spring I and Spring II.  In the key of C with no lever changes.  A fun piece, suitable for performance.  Level of playing: beginner.

$1.25

 "Winter" from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"

Level of playing: Beginner.

$1.25

 Pachelbel's "Canon"

An easy version using broken triads and thirds.  Level: Beginner, early Intermediate.

$1.25

 "Prelude" from Suite #1 (Purcell)

A nice little alternating-hand piece.

$1.25

 "Interlude -Fantasia on Bach"

Based on a Bach cello piece; no lever changes.  Beginner/early Intermediate.

$1.25

Bach "Prelude in C" version #1

This adaptation of the famous prelude has only one lever change, an F#.

$1.25

Bach "Prelude in C" version 2

This version of the famous Prelude has lever changes on a C and F.  Beginning is the same as above.

$1.25

"Siciliana" from Sonata RV52 by Vivaldi

A nice little piece with a swinging rhythm.  F sharps and a middle C sharp are required, as is the B flat above mid-C (this is the only lever change required).  Early Intermediate.

 "La Virginite" by Couperin

The opening piece from his keyboard suite, Les Folies Francoises, this lovely little piece by Couperin makes a nice Rococo addition to any program. Early Intermediate. In a minor, but requires C# and G#. No interior lever flips.

 "Ode to Joy" (Beethoven)

There have been many arrangements made of this piece, but none that really "sat well" on the harp due to the music's very square, chordal nature. This is a very free, almost "New Age-y" version which flows along in very non-strict time, great for preludes or as a solo concert piece.  Uses sixths almost extensively and has a syncopated rhythm in the LH, but no lever flips at all. In C major.

Intermediate Pieces

Mozart's "Adagio" from the Clarinet Concerto

No lever changes.  Lovely piece, with many of Mozart's signature qualities.

$1.25

 "Spanish Dance #2: Orientale" (Granados)

Great little recital piece with only one lever change (a D#).

$1.25

 Pachelbel's "Canon" (Intermediate version)

Just what the world needs - another version of the famous "Canon"!!!!  This is an intermediate version - not too difficult, with clear demarcation between the variations to make repetition easy.

$1.25

 "Fairest Isle" (Purcell)

One of my very favourite Purcell pieces, this is from his opera "King Arthur".  It is an adaptation in C with no lever changes, but as it moves along with chords in both hands, I have listed it as Intermediate.

$1.25

Interlude on "Sheep May Safely Graze" (Bach)

Not the full version, but one that may be used as an interlude during a wedding ceremony or other celebration.  No lever changes.

$1.25

"Silent Worship" (Handel)

A lover sings of observing the object of his affections as she walks in the garden.  Great for weddings.  No lever changes.

$1.25

 Aria from "Rinaldo" (Handel)

Another great Handel piece, with one interior lever change.

$1.25

Largo from the Guitar Concerto (Vivaldi)

A lovely piece for any occasion.  Includes the theme and one variation with ornaments.  In D major with lever changes on the mid G#.

 Faure's Pavane

A beautiful, rather triste piece.  With three sharps and rather quick flips from F sharp to F natural.  Since the piece is played rather slowly, the lever changes are not as great a challenge as they might be.

 "Ave Maria" by Caccini

An incredibly beautiful piece by Giulio Caccini (1545-1618).  You may recognize this piece as it has been recorded by Andrea Bocelli, Charlotte Church and many others.  With one sharp and two lever flips at the end which may be ignored, if desired.

 "Adagio" by Tomaso Albinoni

Yes, that Albinoni Adagio!  It has a short introduction, then launches into the famous and well-known theme. This version has numerous lever flips, but as it's an adagio, you will be playing slowly enough to manage them.

 "Spanish Romace"

A well-known guitar piece by that most productive of composers, Anonymous!!!  G, C and F sharps will be required, with some changes on the Cs and Fs for the contrasting middle section.  A fun piece to play on the harp!

 David's Solo from "Saul" (Handel)

This is one of the very few Handel pieces actually written for the harp (the famous concerto was actually written for organ or harp).  This version is a realization of the figured bass given in the original oratorio, in which it is listed as a "symphony" (i.e.,  an instrumental interlude).  B and E flats are required, and there are some tricky flips in the middle, as this was originally written for a chromatic harp.

Marche pour la Ceremonie des Turcs (Lully)

Made famous in the film "Tous les Matins du Monde", this is a great, upbeat piece originally for full baroque orchestra. It requires F#s and G#s, as well as some interior lever changes requiring a bit of dexterity. Fun piece, especially if you add percussion!

 "La Nieve"

This is an original piece with fun patterns, left hand action and rhythmic interest. It is basically a tango with some quirky little twists. In d minor, with the middle C engaged. Also requires the C above middle C to be engaged at one point. Alternates between ad lib sensuous sections and dance-like sections. Makes a good concert piece; however, if you do intend to play this piece in concert or to record it in any way, please seek permission from me first. Four pages in length.
Note: this piece is basically the harp part for the harp/harpsichord duet "Tango Barroco" featured on my CD "strata".

$2.00

"Dance of the Blessed Spirits" (Gluck)

This is one of my arrangements I call a "Reasonable Facsimile", easily recognizable, but not a note-for-note transcription.  I play around quite a bit with the music, but keep the spirit of Gluck's piece. In D major with no lever flips.

Fantasy on "Air on the G String"

I call this a "Fantasy" simply because it is not a note-for-note transcription of the piece, but rather gives a very satisfying presentation of the piece without those nasty accidentals!  It is in D major and requires a reset C natural 2 above middle C, but NO interior lever flips at all! Perfect for Preludes, Register Signing, Communion or as a concert piece.

Romanza from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (Mozart)

Again, what I like to call a "Reasonable Facsimile": keeps the spirit of the piece while playing around a bit with it's structure. Perfectly recognizable for the audience, it makes a lovely prelude or concert piece. In G major, with NO lever flips.

 Intermediate/Advanced Pieces

"Sicilienne from Pelleas and Melisande" (Faure)

This harp-only version of the famous flute/harp duet by Faure has several interior lever changes.  Lovely, lilting recital piece.

$1.25

Bach "Prelude in C" version #3

This is a more complete version of the famous Prelude, with numerous interior lever changes.

$1.25
