Les Folies Françoises
ou, Les Dominos
a suite of twelve pieces by
François Couperin
This 25-pg. set of twelve rococo pieces from the keyboard works of Couperin le Grand is based on masks, colours and the various aspects of love. The book has extensive background notes on the history of the pieces, ornamentation, temperament, performance styles and the validity of using a lever harp for music of this period. Although some of the pieces are straightforward, others require some rather tricky lever changes (late baroque music being fairly heavily chromatic); I would therefore say that the pieces range from early intermediate to advanced. It is a lovely, evocative suite and admirably suited to the timbre of the harp.
