Seasons
My adult students showed me the need for this book. There are many “recital” pieces for early-to-late beginning young harpists, but few presented with the adult beginner in mind. Here you will find five pieces arranged from themes found in Vivaldi's “Four Seasons”. They are presented in versions for floor harp and in versions for the small lap harp (22-string), as the range of harps played by beginners is great. There are options in many of the pieces for further simplification (without damaging the inherent nature of the piece) or alternate performance considerations. The five pieces work admirably as a suite (especially when linking the two themes from “Spring” together as indicated) or can easily stand alone as individual pieces.
There are some technical considerations to be addressed in these pieces, and these are outlined in a series of short pattern exercises included at the beginning of the book. Thirds are very prevalent, to give that distinctive two-violin sound found in the original. There are some left hand patterns, particularly broken triads in “Winter” and a lilting broken pattern in one version of “Spring”, and these, too, are presented in the exercises. For those up to a challenge, sixths are introduced as well, although these may be excluded in the simplification of the piece. They are, however, worth the work as they add a lovely harmonic quality to the piece.
Three of the pieces are in C major, one is in G major (F#s), and only one requires G#s as it is in a minor. If you don't have G levers on your harp, these Gs can easily be tuned up to G sharp before you play this piece.
